History and Vision
Benassist was founded in 2008 with the vision of providing extraordinary professional expertise and advice with personalized service and direct access to senior consulting actuaries. Having spent years consulting to Fortune 500 clients at the national actuarial consulting firms, we pay close attention to the goals and objectives of our clients and provide individually tailored, cost-effective and practical advice. We are participating members of the Society of Actuaries, the American Academy of Actuaries and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
John L. Mitchell, Principal
John Mitchell, FSA, EA, MAAA, JD is a co-founder of Benassist, and specializes in providing actuarial and benefits consulting services and advice to public and private sponsors of Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans, Post-Employment Benefit Plans (OPEBs) and Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans (SERPs). In addition to helping clients manage their annual valuation, accounting and day-to-day administrative tasks, John regularly consults with clients on retirement plan design issues, funding strategies and participant communication optimization. John frequently works directly with his client’s investment advisors to develop liability driven investment (LDI) solutions to achieve client objectives and mitigate financial risk.
John is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA (EA) and a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD). John maintains memberships in the Society of Actuaries, the American Academy of Actuaries and the Conference of Consulting Actuaries. John is a graduate of Vanderbilt University (1988) and the University of Tennessee College of Law (1991).
Mark W. Miller, Principal
Mark Miller, ASA, EA is a co-founder of Benassist. Over his twenty-five year consulting career, Mark has provided a broad range of consulting services to both municipalities and Fortune 500 clients. His areas of expertise include actuarial valuation of Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans and Post-Employment Benefit Plans (OPEBs), financial modeling, non-discrimination testing, stochastic and deterministic asset/liability forecasts, software development and implementation of pension administration systems. Mark has a comprehensive understanding of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, employers’ accounting standards under FASB statements 87, 88, 106, 112 and 158, governmental accounting standards under GASB statements 25, 27, 43, 45, 50, 67 and 68. He has designed actuarial valuation and administration software for defined benefit and retiree medical and life insurance plans, and has also designed various internet based applications.
Mark is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA (EA). He has a BS from Georgia State University in Mathematics and Actuarial Science.
Robert D. Gallman, Jr., Consulting Actuary
Rob Gallman, ASA joined Benassist as a Consulting Actuary in 2014. He has more than 20 years of experience providing consulting and administrative solutions related to pension and post-employment benefits to both public and private sector clients across a broad range of industries. He has worked primarily in the area of qualified retirement plans but also has extensive experience working with non-qualified executive deferred compensation arrangements and post-retirement medical plans. Rob’s experience includes performing actuarial valuations of defined benefit pension plans to determine funding and accounting requirements under ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code and SFAS 87 and SFAS 88, as well as valuations of other post-retirement benefits under SFAS 106.
Rob is an expert on the design and operation of Supplemental Unemployment Benefit (SUB) plans. He has developed both fully outsourced and co-sourced solutions to administer SUB plans, integrating benefit calculations, state unemployment insurance coordination, employee communications, participant self-service (web, IVR, call center support), trust and benefit payment services.
Rob is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and is a graduate of Georgia State University (1990) with a BS in Mathematics and Actuarial Science.
